A charity shop, thrift shop, thrift store, hospice shop (U.S., Canada), resale shop (when not meaning consignment shop (U.S.)), op shop (Australia/N.Z.) (from "opportunity shop"), or second-hand shop (Malaysia) is a retail establishment operated by a charitable organization for the purpose of fundraising. Charity shops are a type of social enterprise. They usually sell mainly second-hand goods donated by members of the public, and are often staffed by volunteers. Because the items for sale were obtained for free, and business costs are low, the items can be sold at very low prices. After costs are paid, all remaining income from the sales is used in accord with the organization's stated charitable purpose. Costs include purchase and/or depreciation of fixtures (clothing racks, bookshelves, counters, etc.), operating costs (maintenance, municipal service fees, electricity, telephone, limited advertising) and the building lease or mortgage. I appreciate the fact that whenever I shop at a thrift store that my money is going to a worthy cause, but it definitely irks me how much money some thrift stores charge for their items. Example: I was at a GoodWill the other week and they had a Wal-Mart jacket priced higher than name brand jackets that were in the same or better condition. On the other hand, I am sure thrift stores are raising their prices due to the fact people are more than likely snatching up items to resell on EBAY. 3. Q. You would think owning a thrift store would bring in tons of money. But you don't see that many thrift stores out there. So, what gives? What reasons would make it not such a good idea to own a thrift store? Asked by Cita - Mon Sep 21 13:17:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. most thrift stores are run by charities or churches - they get their clothing stock for free thru donations and sell very cheaply - the profits are usually put to some charitable use - I doubt any of them make a real lot of money selling clothes for $1-4 per item, after deducting rent, utilities and minimum wage employee costs. and YOU are not a charity, so you would have to PAY to get inventory - further lowering your profits, if you make any money at all WHY would you think that kinnof store would bring in tons of money?
